Why Rome International Film Festival is Rome, GA’s Ultimate Event

Lights, Camera, Community: Inside Northwest Georgia’s Premier Film Event

There is a distinct, electric kind of magic that settles over Downtown Rome, Georgia, every autumn. As local publishers, Wesley and I have had the joy of experiencing firsthand how cinema can breathe new life into our historic streets, bring people together, and showcase the incredible heartbeat of our community. If you haven’t experienced the Rome International Film Festival (RIFF) yet, or if you’re like us and count down the days until the next one, get ready. Taking place over four action-packed days every fall (with the 23rd annual festival running November 5–8, 2026), RIFF is an absolute must-attend experience for locals and visitors alike.

From Our First Screening to a Deep-Rooted Love for the Rome International Film Festival

Wesley and I attended RIFF for the first time back in 2023, and we were instantly blown away by the quality of the event and the sheer level of craftsmanship on display. With filmmakers entering shorts and feature films from all over the world, it opened our eyes to filmmaking in a whole new light.

As avid movie and theater lovers, we were completely captivated by the art, time, and passion behind each project. While the screenings are always breathtaking, some of our favorite moments have been the Q&A sessions – getting to know the brilliant minds behind the lens, including the actors, directors, and especially the writers. As a writer, hearing about that creative journey from a simple spark of an idea to a fully realized film or short is nothing short of inspiring.

Following a screening, a panel of guests—including actors, writers, directors, and the creative team—answers questions from the audience.

Unforgettable Experiences: From Saturday Morning Cartoons to the Flannery O’Connor Award

One of the best parts of RIFF is that it truly offers something for every age. Having our son join us to experience the festival for the first time makes it even more special for our family! Beyond the incredible lineup of feature movies and short film blocks, one of my personal, low-key favorites is the Saturday Morning Cartoons event—complete with a cereal bar that kids and nostalgic adults both love.

Beyond the screens, part of the fun of RIFF is exploring the diverse, walkable venues dotted along Broad Street and throughout Downtown Rome—from the iconic Historic DeSoto Theatre and the Rome City Auditorium to unique pop-up spaces like Screen 417. It is a wonderful opportunity to step inside unique local event spaces, sample delicious food from neighborhood restaurants, and soak up the lively downtown atmosphere.

And of course, we have to talk about the star power drawn by the festival’s prestigious Flannery O’Connor Award for Storytelling—including the massive excitement surrounding Georgia native Danny McBride receiving the 2026 honor (joining past honorees like Billy Bob Thornton and Ethan Hawke)! Having nationally recognized talent celebrate their craft right here in Rome does wonders for our community’s reputation. As Atlanta continues to build a booming movie hub in the Southeast, Rome is proudly standing out in its own right.

Why RIFF Matters for Downtown Rome

What makes RIFF so vital to our community isn’t just the films—it’s how deeply intertwined it is with local businesses. The festival is passionately organized and presented by local leaders and volunteers, and you can feel that intentional hometown heart in every corner of the event.

From local businesses stepping up as sponsors to local owners participating in the audience, RIFF engages our community like few other events can. It introduces residents to hidden venue gems right in their backyard and prompts us to finally try out those restaurants we’ve been meaning to visit for years. Plus, with year-round special screenings and community partnerships, that creative energy keeps flowing all year long.
