Silver Creek

Silver Creek is a community that is situated right outside of Rome. During the summer, Silver Creek is a popular swimming hole. Silver Creek runs through the Silver Creek and Lindale areas. Some places along the creek allow people easy access to wading and swimming. As a kid, I went to the creek across from Silver Creek United Methodist Church. It has a bridge that leads to the grassy area across the creek.

The other popular location to take a dip in is the Silver Creek Presbyterian Church. I haven’t gotten in that water in years, but I can tell you that it is one of the coldest swimming holes you will find. Swimming in a creek is not my idea of relaxing. I saw a snake while my kids were swimming one time. When you swim in the creek, you swim at your own risk. It is a beautiful church, and the area around it is excellent and very photogenic. We have taken pictures there. Family, prom, and senior photos have all been taken there. Although I mention this place as a swimming hole, please respect the church and property.

The Town Green Fountain

The Town Green Fountain is located in the heart of downtown Rome. It is an interactive splash pad on the lawn in front of The Forum River Center on the banks of the Oostanala River. It is designed to represent the three rivers flowing through Rome. Unfortunately, when we were there, the fountains were not operating.

There are swings, benches, and tables with checkerboard tabletops around the fountain. A grassy hill is also perfect for a blanket for a picnic. Just past the fountain is an area where you can walk up to the riverfront. Next to the Town Green is the Chief John Ross Memorial Bridge that leads to the Heritage Trail System. Across the street from the Town Green is the Rome Area History Museum. There is so much to do and see in the area that you could spend all day there.

Rocky Mountain Project

The Rocky Mountain Project has many things to do and makes for a perfect day trip. One of the many great things to do at Rocky Mountain is the beach area. It is a small area that is roped off for swimming. There are restrooms, swings, and picnic tables close by. There are also plenty of shade trees just past the beach area. I love this area because it is never overcrowded, no matter when we go. We have always been able to find a great spot to set up for the day.

When the kids were younger, we would take a day trip to the beach every summer. They made great memories with their cousins swimming, riding in the pontoon boat, fishing, and using the paddleboat. A day pass costs $5, and they are open from dawn to dusk. Check out my Rocky Mountain Project Beach and Campground post for more information.

Cave Spring

Cave Spring gets its name from the cave and spring in the town’s heart. It is located in Rolater Park, where you will find the purest water. People drive for miles around to fill up bottles, jugs, and whatever else they can find to carry the cave’s water. It doesn’t get any more pure or perfect than that. The spring is channeled through a stream to a public pool in Rolater Park, shaped like Georgia. It is the coldest pool when the Georgia summer heat is beating down on you. As cold as the pool is on the hottest summer days, I can not imagine how cold it is on New Year’s Day when the bravest of the brave swim in the annual Polar Plunge. You can splash in the creek that runs through the park for free. There are tables and benches around the area for you to relax. The pool is open Thursday through Sunday from Memorial Day till Labor Day. The admission price is $4 for adults and $3 for kids. Infants and seniors are free. Check out my blog post about Historic Cave Spring for more information about Cave Spring.
