If you’ve got a piece of property that has gotten a little too wild for comfort, or you are ready to finally break ground on a new project, we have a local business spotlight you are going to want to know about. We have recently gotten to know Legacy Land Care, a veteran-owned land services company serving Rome, Floyd County, and all of Northwest Georgia. Run by local owner-operator John Mulkey, they live by a fantastic motto that says it all: “Overgrown today, restored tomorrow.”

We discovered how John got to where he is today, what makes his work stand out, and how he helps local landowners reclaim their property.

From Military Aviation to Local Land Stewardship

John brings a unique discipline and background to the land care trade. A military veteran with six years of aviation experience, he runs Legacy Land Care with the exact same precision, safety, and professionalism he learned in the service.

When he started the business, it was built on a clear vision and a simple prayer: “God, just get us through today.” Putting everything they had into getting the business off the ground, buying the essential equipment and renting the rest. John admits the early pressure was very real. Looking back on stepping out in faith, his biggest “A-ha” moment has been realizing that “the only way to get over a fear is to simply face it, until it’s considered confidence.”

If he could go back to those early days and give his past self one piece of advice, John shares that he would “challenge myself to question myself less. After all, the visions and ideas were from God, and he was leading the process. Go all in and be fearless.”

Today, John is a proud husband and a busy father to three girls, running a business driven by a passion for hard work, serving his community, and building something his family can be proud of.

The Realities of the Trade: Learning in the Fire

In a trade that John notes can be heavily over saturated, Legacy Land Care stands out by keeping things personal and high-quality. When looking for reliable land services, John advises property owners to always look for clean brands, fully insured companies, and owners who are willing to learn and grow from their mistakes.

Building a business from scratch comes with its own steep learning curve. As John puts it, “There is no ‘how to’ book. It’s learning in the fire. And you have to humble yourself quickly.”

With Legacy Land Care, you aren’t dealing with a revolving door of subcontractors. John is the owner, and he is on every single job:

Hands-On Involvement: From the first phone call and free on-site estimate to hauling equipment and operating the machinery, John handles it all.
Professional Machinery: He runs his own heavy equipment, including a CAT track loader equipped with a forestry mulcher.
Trusted Support: For larger or specialized projects that require extra hands, John brings in trusted help, while maintaining personal oversight from start to finish.

What does John enjoy most about the work? It’s simply helping local home and landowners take back the use of their land. Reflecting on what it takes to make a difference in the community, his core advice is simple: Trust your vision, don’t be afraid to go all in, and remember that everyone starts out figuring it out as they go.
