Local mattress manufacturer Heritage Sleep Concepts opened the doors to its 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Armuchee, Georgia, to showcase exactly how the magic happens, and how the company’s deep roots in the Rome area shape everything they do. We were honored to be able to tour the factory and see the process from start to finish.
From century-old traditions to cutting-edge tech, here is a look at what goes on behind the factory doors.
Over a Century of Local History
The story behind Heritage Sleep Concepts doesn’t just stretch back a few years; it spans five generations and more than 105 years right here in Rome, Ga.
It all started before 1910 with Sanford Mattress. Back then, the original mattress mending operation was incredibly hands-on: picking up mattresses in the morning, bringing them into town to hand-sew the upholstery, repack the cotton layers, and refurbish them before delivering them back to local homes the very same day.
Over the decades, the business evolved. In 1942, the grandfather took over the reins, followed by Terry Spears, who married into the family in 1967 and launched Spears Mattress in 1973. Terry had a vision to grow the company nationally. At one peak point, the family operated a massive 350,000-square-foot facility near the smokestacks in Celanese, employing hundreds of people and running dozens of trucks across the country.
After a period away from the industry, the family came back together to launch Heritage Sleep Concepts (HSC) in 2015. The name “HSC” actually holds a special meaning: the family’s boys were attending Hampden-Sydney College (HSC) in Virginia at the time, and it served as a nod to their part in carrying the family legacy forward.
The Factory Floor: Where Tradition Meets Innovation
Walking through the facility today, you will find a unique blend of old-school craftsmanship and high-tech machinery. The factory maintains anywhere from 100 to 130 unique active SKUs in its system, allowing the team to build almost any style of bed imaginable.
Here are a few highlights from Heritage Sleep Concepts factory floor:
- The Quilting & Stitching Department: This is where the top of the mattress, the panel, comes together. Massive rolls of fabric, fibers, foam, and organic materials are laced and stitched together. Specialized machines use an algorithm to automatically cut the fabric and stitch unique patterns like waves, channels, or circles. The tighter the stitching pattern, the firmer the mattress top feels.
- The Handle & Embroidery Stations: For premium lines, the border fabric goes through automatic vertical stitching machines that precisely cut and sew heavy-duty handles into place. Nearby, custom embroidery machines stitch the brand names directly onto the mattress borders.
- Old-School Hand-Tufting: While the company embraces modern tech, it still practices traditional, old-school mattress making. For premium lines, craftsmen use long needles to hand-tuft the mattress layers completely compression-tight without using a single drop of glue.
- The “Tub” & Core Assembly: In the back of the factory, the “guts” of the bed are assembled. The team builds both foam-encased spring units and edge-to-edge pocketed coil units using premium Italian glues designed to let the bed flex naturally without breaking down over time.
- The State-of-the-Art C3 Machine: To support the growing e-commerce and “bed-in-a-box” market, the company invested in a massive C3 compression machine. It applies 20,000 tons of force to vacuum-seal and roll-pack mattresses flat so they can slide perfectly into a 17″ x 17″ x 47″ box to be shipped via UPS all over the country—from Ohio to Los Angeles.
Premium Materials & Next-Gen Sleep
Heritage Sleep Concepts is always looking ahead to see where sleep technology is moving, making sure to only invest in features that truly benefit the sleeper. Right now, there is incredible customer demand for unique, wellness-focused materials:
- Natural Latex: Sourced directly from tree sap, the natural latex layers are incredibly popular. Because natural latex is antimicrobial and dust-mite resistant, it’s a staple of their organic mattress lines.
- Charcoal-Infused Latex: The factory uses charcoal-infused latex as a natural neutralizer to help keep the sleep surface fresh and healthy.
- Copper-Infused Memory Foam: Copper is fantastic for inflammation. They use copper-infused visco-elastic foam to offer that classic, contouring feel while providing a great wellness benefit for the customer.
- Canadian Spruce Foundations: A great mattress needs a great foundation. The team builds all of their own mattress bases right here in the factory using premium Canadian Spruce wood.
The company is also incredibly excited about a brand-new, ultra-premium line currently in development. Designed by Jordan and his mother, this upcoming line will feature needle-hand-tufting, premium pocketed coils, zero polyurethane foam, and a luxurious cooling cover woven from natural bamboo fibers. It’s designed to bring old-world heritage and luxury to peak modern sleep.
A Different Approach to Customer Service At Heritage Sleep Concepts
Because Heritage Sleep Concepts owns its building and operates as a domestic, family-owned manufacturer, the business operates differently than the big corporate mattress chains:
1. No High-Pressure Commissions
The showroom staff work on a set hourly salary, not commission. When customers walk into the showroom, the team won’t immediately steer them toward a high-ticket mattress just to make a quick buck. Their only goal is to ask about sleep complaints, let the customer relax, and help find the bed that genuinely fits their body and budget.
2. Factory-Direct Pricing
By cutting out the corporate middleman, the everyday factory prices at Heritage Sleep Concepts are typically considerably cheaper than what a consumer would pay for the exact same mattress at a national retail chain.
3. Local Accountability

If there is ever a problem, customers can call the Armuchee office, and the team can easily bring the mattress back to the production line, fix it, and get it right back to them.
Heritage Sleep Concepts Is Proudly Rooted in Floyd County
The founding family has lived, worked, and gone to school in Floyd County for generations. Over the decades, their manufacturing operations have employed thousands of local residents, heavily impacting the community economy. The factory has even hosted local leaders, senators, and the Governor to showcase domestic manufacturing.
Many of the core factory team members and plant managers have been working alongside the family for 20, 25, and even 35 years. That kind of longevity means senior craftsmen are constantly teaching the next generation exactly how to build a mattress the right way.
Heritage Sleep Concepts chose to own its factory and buy an additional 10 acres right next to the airport because the family is planning for the next 100 years in Rome. They look forward to expanding their team, employing more of their neighbors, and keeping Northwest Georgia sleeping soundly for generations to come.
