The South Rome Community Association is Rejuvenating a Neighborhood, and Inspiring a Future.
Rome, Georgia isn’t just a charming town; it’s a tapestry woven from the threads of its people. Here, community isn’t just a word, it’s the lifeblood of our way of life. It’s the welcoming faces greeting you at the farmer’s market, the helping hands offered during a neighbor’s need, and the shared laughter echoing through local festivals. It’s the sense of belonging that makes you feel like you’ve always been here, even if you just arrived.
In Rome, GA community is the fertile ground where dreams blossom, challenges are overcome, and celebrations reach new heights. It’s the reason our town thrives, and the reason you’ll feel more than just welcome, you’ll feel like you truly belong. This strong sense of community is what the South Rome Community Association strives to nurture and amplify.
We had the privilege to meet with two of the directors for the South Rome Community Association: Marquita Davis, the Program Director for their free tutoring and mentorship program, and Ralph Davis who is the Program Director of the garden program. They shared what the South Rome Community means to them and how they are working with the community to make a positive change in South Rome.
Who Are The South Rome Community Association
The South Rome Community Association was founded in 1986 on land graciously donated to the community by the City of Rome. The current building was constructed through the efforts of dedicated community members. Nearly 40 years later, a group of passionate volunteers is re-energizing the organization, transforming the building into a vibrant hub for gatherings and events. This community-driven organization is breathing new life into the center, ensuring it continues to serve as a cornerstone for generations to come.
Over the past few years, grants awarded to improve the community have been appreciated and have made a powerful impact. However, this is just the beginning of what needs to be done to achieve the South Rome Community Association’s goals. Building the community and sharing hopes and dreams with residents helps inspire the future.
Rebuilding and Rejuvenating South Rome: A Collaborative Vision
The vision for South Rome has two key goals: revitalization and community cohesion.
Rejuvenating South Rome: The community building serves as a central location for meetings and events, driving revitalization efforts by attracting residents and businesses. This will ultimately increase property values and create an affordable space.
Building a Cohesive Community: The South Rome Community Association aims to transform South Rome into an extension of downtown, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and shared purpose within the community. Events like the collard festival, along with others planned collaboratively with residents, will further strengthen these bonds.
Bringing it to Life: Building a thriving community requires collaboration and engagement. They are committed to working together with residents and businesses to bring all the pieces together, sparking interest and enthusiasm. By joining forces, we can transform this vision into a reality for South Rome.
South Rome Community Garden
South Rome is considered to be a food desert, meaning many homes lack sufficient food resources to provide healthy meals for their families. This can be caused by various reasons, such as limited access to grocery stores or high prices for fresh produce. One of the main things families are missing is healthy food, such as fruits and vegetables, in their diet.
The community garden is a wonderful way for the community to come together and help each other out. Gardeners and volunteers rent a garden spot for a year and grow produce. This has become a very popular pastime with a powerful impact. Not only is the community learning about how to grow their own products, but they are also helping to get fruits and vegetables into homes that need them. The extra produce is made available to anyone who wants it.
In 2020, when social distancing was at its height, the garden provided a safe space for people to connect. It was a comfort space that gave people a sense of belonging. In November 2023, the Association hosted its first annual Collard Festival, a resounding success that showcased the community’s spirit. It brought together the community along with several local churches for a fun event.
Building A Better Future Through Tutoring & Mentorship
South Rome Community Association’s Free Tutoring and Mentoring Program is available for students who need extra academic support or positive role models in their lives. The volunteer tutors and mentors are committed to making a difference in the community.
Many children fall behind in school, and their parents may not be able to afford private tutors. Additionally, some children lack positive role models in their lives, who can encourage and support them. This program aims to empower them to become responsible citizens and agents of change in the world.
The program is powered by passionate volunteers who are committed to making a lasting impact on the South Rome community. They understand that financial limitations shouldn’t hinder a child’s potential, and they are dedicated to helping each student reach their full potential.
They go beyond simply providing academic tutoring. Mentors act as positive role models, offering encouragement, support, and guidance to help children navigate the challenges of life. Their goal is to instill in them the values of responsibility and community engagement, inspiring them to become positive changemakers in the world.
If a parent or teacher sees that a child needs help with their schoolwork or simply needs someone to believe in them, they can contact the program by texting “Interest Form” to 706-591-3363. A link will be sent with an online form to be completed. They offer tutoring at the community building throughout the week after school, volunteers are also available at Main Elementary during school days. So there are flexible times available to fit your schedule.
While this program is located and focused on the South Rome Community, it is not exclusive to South Rome residents.
If you are interested in volunteering as a tutor or mentor, then contact Marquita Davis at 706-591-3363 or send an email to reflectionsandresults@gmail.com. All volunteers are screened and provided with training.
