Every Saturday morning, a group of Rome’s finest gathers at the East Rome McDonald’s from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM for gospel singing. They have been doing this every Saturday morning since 2004, only missing a few days due to inclement weather.
Although their numbers vary slightly, you can expect about 20-25 people participating each week, with some regulars and people stopping by to observe or join in. People bring their kids and grandkids. Nationally known Gospel talent has been known to drop by. People have stopped by on the way through town and have joined in. You never really know who you might see.
Typically, the songs are selected from a hymnal, and the group sings the songs. Guitars, banjos, fiddles, and dobros generally provide the accompaniment. Sometimes people bring in other instruments like harmonicas, tambourines, and even scrub boards.
Soloists are sometimes featured, but the typical preferred style is communal group singing. There are usually microphones provided for general amplification.
The staff and management at the East Rome McDonald’s have been very welcoming to this group from the beginning. The staff even sometimes requests certain songs and can be heard, at times, joining in.
Prior local radio personality, Delmas Franklin, started this group after breakfast one morning on a whim. Before getting up to leave, he recommended to his group of friends that they sing a gospel song. This simple act blossomed into the weekly group that now attends the singing.
People sometimes stop and ask what local church the group is affiliated with. Although this group shares a common love of old hymns and southern gospel music, the members attend worship services all around Rome separately. No specific denomination or local church organizes or sponsors this group. Their common bond is the love of music and singing. All are welcome to attend and participate. The East Rome McDonald’s Gospel Singing is every Saturday Morning from 9:00–10:30 AM. Come early to enjoy breakfast and visit before it begins.
