As a lifelong Roman, I’ve always been drawn to the heart of our city, that special place between the rivers where history and modern life flow together. For me, one of the most vibrant examples of this is the Town Green. Tucked just behind the Rome Area History Museum and right in front of the Forum, it’s more than just a patch of grass; it’s our city’s living room, a place where we gather, celebrate, and cool off.
The Town Green Is An Interactive Map Of Our City
I can’t count the number of times I’ve strolled through the Town Green, especially on a warm day, and seen children splashing and laughing in the fountain. It’s one of those pure, simple joys that makes you smile. But this fountain is more than just a place to beat the Georgia heat. It’s a beautiful, thoughtful representation of our three rivers—the Etowah, the Oostanaula, and the Coosa—that have been the lifeblood of this area for centuries. The design also gives a nod to our city’s Cherokee roots, a poignant reminder of the history that flows just as steadily as the water in the fountain.
The Town Green Is A Year Round Gathering Place
While the Town Green is a definite summer hotspot, its appeal doesn’t fade with the season. When the sun begins to set on a warm evening, the green transforms. Some of my favorite memories have been made during the First Friday concerts series that are held during the summer on the first Fridays of the months of June, July, August, and September. There’s something magical about spreading out a blanket, listening to live music, and seeing the community come together under the stars. It’s a classic Rome experience that I recommend to everyone.
And just when you think the Town Green has given all it can for the year, fall arrives, and with it, the Rome Shakespeare Festival. The green becomes an open-air theater, and the words of the Bard echo through downtown. It’s a cultural experience that feels both grand and intimate, a perfect way to spend an autumn evening.
So, whether you’re looking for a place to cool off, a spot to enjoy some music, a bit of theater, or just a bench to sit and watch the world go by, the Town Green is waiting. It’s a place where you can truly feel the pulse of our city.
One evening in the late summer, we were strolling through the Town Green when someone stopped up and insisted on taking our photo. We weren’t sure what to expect, but when they handed me my phone back, I was very pleased with the result.
