Escape To The Rocky Mountain Project Beach And Campground

The Rocky Mountain Project is located just north of Rome. It is a perfect day trip or a great place to camp for a few nights. If you are there for the day, there is a $5 parking fee. It would be best to have exact cash because you pay at a kiosk, which does not give change. You can also purchase an annual parking permit if you frequently visit.

There are three entrances to the park. The first entrance is where we went when we arrived. There was a welcome center, a boat ramp, and walking trails. Inside the welcome center was information about the lakes and the history of the Rocky Mountain Project. The second entrance takes you to the camping, picnic, and beach area. The third entrance takes you to another boat ramp, the archery range, and more walking trails.

Just to the left of the Welcome Center is a little cabin that has been moved from its original location just a few miles down the road. It was once a general store for the people living in the area. More information about it is on the sign in front.

One of the many great things to do at Rocky Mountain is the beach area. It is a small area roped off for swimming. There are restrooms, swings, and picnic tables close by. There is also plenty of shade just past the beach area. I love this area because it is never overcrowded, no matter when we go. We have always been able to find a great spot to set up for the day.

When the kids were younger, we would take a day trip to the beach every summer. They made great memories with their cousins swimming, riding in the pontoon boat, fishing, and using the paddleboat.

There are plenty of places to fish. We were there on a day when the park was almost empty. Fishing is allowed from the first of the month until the tenth. There are signs posted stating this.

One summer, my son caught his first fish at Rocky Mountain Project. Fishing is allowed from the 1st to the 10th of each month. (Thanks to a reader who pointed out that Rocky Mountain Project has two lakes. At Heath Lake, you can only fish the 1st-10th of each month, and at Antioch Lake, you can fish daily.) Make sure you have your fishing license. When I was 15, I was caught fishing without a license and got a warning ticket. Do not be like me! Make sure you have your license when fishing.

A picnic pavilion can be reserved, and many public picnic tables are in shaded areas. Each picnic table has a charcoal grill available, and plenty of trash cans are sitting around for convenience.

I love how much shade there is over the picnic areas, and they all have a great view of the lake.

There are Hiking Trails and Bike Trails throughout the park. Each one is marked with its difficulty and whether it is a walking or biking trail. We picked up a map at the entrance that showed all the trails when we arrived.

Boating, Canoeing, and Kayaking are all allowed on the lake. However, there are rules about the speed and types of boats allowed. All rules are posted at each boat ramp. Boat ramps are located at the first and third entrances.

I visited Rocky Mountain years ago . Didn’t know about the old cabin there now and don’t remember visiting the welcome center. I definitely want to go back now and revisit after reading your article. Thanks for the great information.

  3. Hi Erin, I’m enjoying your website. However, I can’t seem to find an address for the beautiful lake photos above. I’m assuming that the photos are taken near Rome, but I would like to know for sure. When I try to find Heath Lake on a map, it shows a lake near Columbus, GA Could you post the address for Heath lake near Rome? Thank you 🙂
