Rome, Georgia, boasts a rich history and undeniable Southern charm. Yet, like many communities nationwide, we face challenges surrounding racial equality and understanding. One Community United, is a powerful force working to bridge these divides.
I had the privilege of speaking with Cheryl Jenkins, Chair of the Board for One Community United. Through our conversation, I gained a deeper appreciation for their work and its importance to our community.
Founded by a diverse group of residents, One Community United fosters a more unified Rome by bringing people together. Regardless of race, religion, or political views, they create a space for open conversations about race relations and community issues.
One Community United’s Proactive Approach
One Community United emerged during a period when American communities were making national headlines due to racial and social injustices. A group of concerned residents came together proactively to strengthen Rome, GA, with the hope of preventing similar incidents. Their vision is to create a prepared and educated community capable of addressing such issues if they arise.
Through collaboration with local police departments, schools, churches, neighborhoods, and sub-communities, they tackle the challenging discussions of race, ethnicity, religion, and political viewpoints. They believe that despite varying backgrounds, we all share a common desire: a safe and prosperous community where we can raise our children, practice our faith, work productively, and flourish. To achieve this, they hold regular community meetings and bring educational programs to schools.

We seek a community where peace and harmony prevail, and fear and mistrust are dispelled.We want to be a source of information and outreach to our communities through community events, dialogue and communications leading to improved relationships between communities and educational programs within communities.

One Table: Fostering Unity Through Shared Experience
One Community United’s signature event is “One Table,” an annual gathering where people from all walks of life come together for a shared meal. The setting itself is symbolic, held on the Chief John Ross Memorial Bridge overlooking the confluence of the Oostanaula and Etowah Rivers, where they form the Coosa River. This powerful location in Rome perfectly reflects the organization’s mission of bridging divides within the community.
As One Community United’s largest fundraiser, One Table embodies their core values. When you purchase a ticket, you contribute to a portion of another’s, ensuring participation from those who might not otherwise afford it, such as students or guests. This thoughtful approach fosters diversity at the table, encouraging attendees to engage with unfamiliar faces and discover common ground.
