I am such a nerd when it comes to Museums. I love history, and what better way to learn than at a museum? Museums visually look at history, and Rome has some fantastic museums. Growing up, my mom took us to area museums during the summer, and I loved it. Here are the Best Museums To Visit When In Rome, Georgia
Rome Area History Museum
Located downtown on Broad Street, the Rome Area History Museum has an extensive memorabilia collection from around Rome. It also tells of the area’s history from different points of view. Many items in the museum are on loan from families that have had a part in shaping Rome.
The Clock Tower Museum
Located inside Rome’s Clock Tower is a museum with murals that tell the history of Rome and the restored original clockworks. You can also climb the steps to the top of the clock tower and enjoy the best view of Rome. If you want to schedule a visit, contact the Rome Area History Museum at 706-295-5576. The E.C.O. Center
The E.C.O. Center is located at Ridge Ferry Park and is a fun place to learn about the ecology of Rome. It has several kinds of local wildlife, including turtles, fish, snakes, and more. It is a place to learn about the importance of the rivers to our area. Having boys, we have visited the E.C.O. Center several times. They love seeing animals. Outside the E.C.O. Center is a wetlands path you can walk through. You never know what kind of wildlife you will see in the wetlands. It is home to a variety of wildlife. From May through October, you can schedule a tour of the Coosa River on the Sulzbacher Roman Holiday. The Sulzbacher Roman Holiday gives you a tour of the Coosa River and tells the history of steamships running up and down the river. You can read about our experience on the Sulzbacher Roman Holiday by clicking here.
Chieftain Museum, the home of Major Ridge
The home of Major Ridge, the Chieftain Museum, tells of the history of the Cherokee Indians. Major Ridge was an enormous influence in the Treaty of New Echota negotiations in 1835. His home is a National Historic Landmark. The home and property display the life and history of the Cherokee People living in the Rome area. There is a replica of a ferry that was used to transport people across the river during the time Major Ridge lived there. There is a lot of history of the house’s structure as well.
