Rome, Georgia is a city with a rich history and culture. It is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is the county seat of Floyd County. Rome was founded in 1834 and was originally named “New Echota” after the Cherokee capital. The city was renamed Rome in 1835 after the Italian city because they both have seven hills surrounding it. Rome has a rich history that the locals are very proud of.
Rome is home to several historical sites, including the Chieftains Museum, Myrtle Hill Cemetery, and the Rome Area History Center. The Chieftains Museum is on the banks of the Etowah River and was built by Major Ridge, A Cherokee Indian Leader. The Myrtle Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of many notable people, including former First Lady Ellen Axis Wilson. The Rome History Center is a museum that tells the story of the city and its people.
Rome also has several attractions, including the Museum Of Flight, The Historic DeSoto Theatre, and The Clock Tower. The Museum of Flight, located at Richard B Russell Airport, is an exciting and interactive museum that tells the importance of aviation in shaping our nation’s history. The Historic DeSoto Theatre is a historic theater that hosts a variety of performances, including opera, ballet, and theater. The Clock Tower is the heart of Rome and is a unique part of history. No visit is complete without visiting The Clock Tower.
With so many things to see and do, it can be overwhelming, so I have created a simple itinerary for a 3-day trip to Rome, Georgia. It’s a great starting point for customizing your perfect itinerary.
Day 1:
- Arrive at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and rent a car.
- Drive to Rome (about 90 minutes).
- Check in to your hotel in downtown Rome.
- Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s history and culture. Visit Broad Street, the Myrtle Hill Cemetery, and the Rome Area History Center.
- Enjoy a leisurely dinner at one of Rome’s many restaurants in the evening.
Day 2:
- Take a day trip to Berry College. There are a variety of activities to enjoy at Berry College, including hiking to the House ‘O Dreams, watching a sporting event, and observing wildlife.
- In the evening, return to Rome and enjoy a show at The Historic DeSoto Theatre.
Day 3:
- Have breakfast at one of Rome’s many cafes.
- Visit the Rome Farmers Market.
- Do some shopping in downtown Rome.
- Enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Rome’s many restaurants in the evening.
