The Best Camping In Rome, Georgia

I love to camp. Growing up, we camped for a lot of our vacations. I have so many good memories of camping. My kids and stepkids enjoy camping. However, my husband is not particularly excited about camping. He camps because it makes me happy. I love all things camping. I have a Pinterest board full of camping ideas. Okay, you get my point. I love it. I have to be honest; I had to research places to camp in Rome, Georgia because I have never camped here in Rome. I was amazed to find some wonderful places to camp in my hometown. The following is a list of the best camping in Rome, Georgia.

Lock and Dam Park and Campground

The Lock and Dam Park and Campground have a couple of options for camping. With a few campsites on the Coosa River and several nestled in the woods. The campsites on the river have a covered patio and a great view of the water, and the ones not directly on the river have great wooded areas for campers and tents. A popular event at the Lock and Dam each year is the Geocache. The lady we talked to at the Lock and Dam told us that every year in October, the Lock and Dam hosts the 2nd largest Geocache event globally. If you have never heard of Geocaching, it is an activity where you search for and find hidden containers or caches utilizing GPS coordinates. The caches may contain small items, or they may only contain a ledger for the person to sign to mark their find. People come from all over the world to this event. It is so popular that campsites are reserved a year in advance. The campers get into the Halloween season and decorate the area outside their campers and tents.

Rocky Mountain Project Beach and Campground

The Rocky Mountain Project Beach and Campground is north of Rome and great for a day trip or camp. It has a beach area for you to swim in. It has ramps to put in your boat, paddle boat, paddleboard, canoe, or kayak. It has lots of picnic tables and a pavilion. It has a fishing dock that you can fish off of. There are also easily accessible walking trails. This is probably the one place where I have spent the most time. Every time I have been there, it has never been overly busy. When we went to take pictures, the campground was occupied completely but not crowded on the beach or at the best fishing spots. You can also see a lot of wildlife there.

Cedar Creek in Cave Spring

Cedar Creek in Cave Spring is located between Rome and Cave Spring. It is just minutes from downtown Cave Spring, a wonderful southern town with so much charm. The campsite is right on the creek and has many activities to do. RV and kayak rentals are available on-site. They also have a driving range for those who like to golf. Being on the creek people can float down the creek on tubes or use kayaks. It also has picnic areas for day trip use. On one of the buildings, this awesome mural painted on the side would be great for a group photo or a selfie.

James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park and Campground

James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park and Campground has several options for camping. The newest addition to the park is the backcountry campsites. These are primitive campsites that vehicles cannot access and have no running water or electricity. There are four backcountry campsites. You must park and walk to the camping site to get to the backcountry campsites. They are nestled in the woods, close to the lake’s backside, and surrounded by walking trails. I know this camping type has always been an option for avid campers, but it has become even more popular over the past few years. It seems to be a trend among young adults to opt for primitive camping. The second option for camping is my favorite, and that is camping at a site with water and power hookups in an RV or pop-up camper. To get to the campsites, you drive up a hill. Once you get up the hill, you will find 25 campsites leveled off. This area is the premium campground and has a bathhouse, a playground, and laundry. The third option for camping at Sloppy Floyd State Park is unique to the area. This is the only campground in the area with multiple cabins that you can rent. There are four cabins that can sleep up to eight people. They are situated ideally on the side of the hills and have a picturesque view.

The Pocket and John’s Mountain

The Pocket and John’s Mountain is an excellent place to camp. It has private lots that are very well-shaded. The campsites do not require a reservation and are just first come, first serve. When we visited, it was posted that campsites are $15 a night, subject to change. Camping season is from April until October. The campsites are primitive, with no water or electricity. There are restrooms with running water. While there, you can hike on the walking trails to a waterfall or splash in the creek. There are also picnic areas and a pavilion that you can use for day trips.

State Mutual Stadium

Lastly, there are camping spots behind the State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves. It is right on the river within walking distance, a couple of miles from Ridgeferry Park. There are miles of walking trails. And, of course, the main attraction is the Rome Braves. It is also a perfect place to be when they have fireworks. The fireworks show that the Rome Braves put on is the best around. The Braves’ season is from April through September. The campsites can be reserved year-round and have both water and power hookups. However, they do not provide a dump station for sewage and do not have showers or bathrooms. You can reserve per night, per week, or per month. One essential thing to me when picking a campsite is where the camper sits. The site is where I spend time with my family creating memories. My favorite ones are the ones where we are nestled amongst the trees. I know snakes and ticks terrify me, but it isn’t camping unless you are in the forest, or it appears that way. I went camping at the beach a long time ago, and when I arrived, it was like pulling into an RV Sales lot. The campers and RVs were lined up like rows of cars in a parking lot. I learned to appreciate well-laid-out campsites, and that is one thing I look for.
