If you’ve lived in Rome for any length of time, you know I love uncovering the heart behind the people and businesses that make our community so special. Recently, I had the absolute honor of sitting down with a true legend who is about to make our town a lot more “sunny”, Harry Wayne Casey, better known as KC of KC and the Sunshine Band.
As we look forward to his performance at the Forum River Center on June 5th, I wanted to share some insights from our conversation that show exactly why this superstar is still leading the charge in music 50 years later.
A Timeless Mission
Back in 1973, KC founded the band with a specific goal: to create music that helped people forget about their problems and simply be happy amidst the social and political tensions of that era. Looking at the world in 2026, he still believes in that mission. He shared that music has always brought people together, and it continues to serve that purpose today.
While the world moves faster now, his sound is finding a whole new life on platforms like TikTok, where younger generations are revitalizing his hits and keeping the “Dance Revolution” alive. And for those of us who can’t get enough, there is even a KC and the Sunshine Band-inspired musical in the works, you can bet I’ll be first in line for those tickets!
The Work Ethic of a Legend
It was incredible to hear about his early days. Long before he was headlining world tours, KC started at age 17 doing various tasks around T.K. Records. When we talked about the “unglamorous” lessons he still carries with him, he explained that he never viewed any of those early jobs as menial.
He was simply happy to be in that environment, approaching every task with a desire to do his best and never feeling that any job was beneath him. It is clear that this grounded work ethic and drive are exactly what propelled him to such massive success and keep him performing with such energy today.
Encouragement for Rome’s Local Talent
Rome has an incredible local music scene, with talented bands playing at our favorite spots every weekend. I asked KC what advice he would offer to our local artists looking to stand out. He emphasized the importance of authenticity, suggesting that musicians should focus on being true to their own sound and avoid the temptation to copy what others are doing.
When in Rome…
When he isn’t on stage performing over 50 shows a year, KC prioritizes rest to ensure he can give his fans his all. However, depending on his tour schedule when he rolls into town this June, he mentioned that he enjoys finding a great local spot for breakfast or brunch. So, if you’re lucky and out enjoying a meal on Broad Street on concert day, keep your eyes peeled!
I am truly amazed by his kindness and his continued drive to entertain. I can’t wait to see that energy in person at the Forum.
